Earth Day is Every Day!!

TREAD LIGHTLY UPON THE EARTH--IT IS YOUR HOME AND HOME TO EVERY LIVING AND NON LIVING THING IN EXISTANCE

Although I used to get involved back in my 40's, when I was studying Environmental Science towards my degree--now I just try to live my life as if every day is Earth Day! At the time I joined with a group that did water sampling along the Croton River--for 4 years, rain or shine and sometimes snow--out we were testing. Of course we also picked up garbage along our route if there was any around. Some of the men used to move fallen limbs out of the smaller streams to the banks. Then on Father's Day we joined in with other Environmental Groups in the area and had a Shad festival. I could be found in one of two places. Either I was busy collecting signatures for various environmental causes--or up at the counter collecting money for the shad and other items we were selling! All of it was hard work--but I really enjoyed it.

Now that I am in my 70's I no longer can do all that. Now--I reuse and recycle as much as is humanly possible. I am finding that I end up recycling plastics most of all. They say that they stopped with that stuff--but they really have not! I just hope against hope that where ever the plastics are taken they are able to be broken down and re made into something else--like park benches--or maybe part of roads-just NOT thrown into garbage dumps where they will last for many many many years to come!! Or possibly they have or can figure out a way to make them biodegradable. I sure hope so because lots of the items I buy in supermarkers is packed in the stuff.

As for the parkways near me, and there are many all with River in their names (for good reason)-they have flooded many times over the years--Now with the Climate changing it is happening more and more frequently. The parkways turn into part of the rivers beside them. There just isn't enough grass and trees to absorb the excess runoff. We desparately need more GREEN spaces and less concrete virtually everywhere. We need more trees to take in that carbon and release oxygen.

And while I am saying all this--I must also say with all that is wrong with our human world right now--ever since I was a young girl-all I ever wished for was

PEACE ON EARTH-NO WARS--NO HATE AND THAT ALL GET ALONG WITH EACH OTHER AND THE OTHER INHABITANTS OF OUR WORLD
