Book Review-Little Flower: A Novel-Ted Oswald

Friday, February 9, 2018

This is unlike any other book I have ever read. It is written as a letter--a MASSIVE conversational letter to Pope Francis from a Nun who wants Sister Shanti to be canonized. She takes the Pope verbally through all that went on--the good, the bad, and the ugly. But in a way that does not offend and at times was quite comical as the Unlikely pair of Nun (Sister Shanti) and the prostitute (Meeta) attempt to locate a boy they both loved (obviously in different ways!). The truths and lies they uncover are many--but they are determined. They discover human trafficking and drug dealing along the way. They also discover good and bad in many of the characters who play a small part.

I must say I was deeply moved by this little tale and would love if everyone would read it. The ending will surprise you--I am positive--as it did me. I would like to also say that I forgot that the author is male until I again glanced at the cover--it is rare that a man can write a women's part so very well!!

About the Book: (from Amazon)

Little Flower chronicles the unique bond shared by two damaged souls: Sister Shanti, a mischievous, elderly nun from Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity, and Meeta, a young prostitute with dreams of a life lived outside the brothel. Thrown together when a young man they love is murdered, they embark upon a darkly comic journey through New Delhi’s underbelly in a search to understand the curious crime that has stolen him. As they plunge ever deeper into mystery and peril, they are forced to confront a cast of colorful characters and the contradictions that run through the center of every human soul, all before arriving at an unforgettable final revelation that shocks as much as it inspires.

Utterly endearing and completely moving, Little Flower stands as a testament to the wild and unwieldy power of love in its many forms.

About the Author: (from Indigogo)

My name is Ted Oswald, and I’m a lawyer, author, and new father to a little boy (yikes!). Back in 2012, I successfully crowdfunded the release of a ‘nonprofit novel’ called Because We Are, a moving mystery story set in Haiti with net profits donated to charity. Readers liked the book, enough that it was later acquired and re-published in a beautiful new edition by Amazon Publishing.

Two years ago, I had the idea for a new and compelling story set in India. In 2015, I traveled to New Delhi to research it, and connected with remarkable nuns from Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity and dedicated groups serving sex workers and their vulnerable children.

And so Little Flower, my most creative, engrossing story yet, was born.

Human trafficking and modern-day slavery are oppressive realities in India, but there are some shining lights working to right these wrongs. Just as I wanted Because We Are to leap beyond the page and impact lives, Little Flower will be a tool to inspire readers and help support the work of change-making organizations, Sari Bari, Kat Katha and International Justice Mission.

This does sound like a totally different kind of book. I imagine the two will end up with a much better understanding of each other. I can also imagine the sadness and lack of hope they find during their journey. I wish the world could put as much time, money and effort into these types of problems (drugs and trafficking) as they do politics and the like.
