Book Review-The Ghouls of Calle Goya: When malice results from good intentions!-Owen Jones

Friday, February 10, 2017

The story begins with the induction of four people into a very secret society that has been in existence for hundreds of years-although very few have ever heard of it. They happen to own many properties around that all bear the name of Goya (the artist) for whom the society was originally started in honor of----. The 4 new members are accepted and as a kind of prize are allowed to use one of the properties to celebrate.

Meanwhile Frank has just married a young Thai woman and as a wedding gift is told by his boss that he can use his apartment free of charge as a wedding present. Frank and Joy arrive at their destination--then things start to get strange--very strange.

What I think I found most interesting was the differences in the cultures. Frank, who didn't understand Thai or the Thai culture travels with his wife to her home and was thrown into a position where he felt useless. Very much in love with his new bride he rides it all out. Her family ignores him. I'm not sure but part of it could be that they weren't considered married. It wasn't until they were married by Buddhist priests that Joy finally overcomes her very deep depression and hallucinations--and the family is finally semi happy at any rate!

Finally back in England the loose ends are pulled together and apologies and amends are made.

About the Book: (from Amazon)

When Frank, a staid, middle-aged, confirmed bachelor takes his diplomat Thai wife to a friend’s apartment on the Costa del Sol for their dream honeymoon, they are in Nirvana… until the ghouls of a secret Scandinavian society torment the superstitious young woman to the point of seeking death to end her suffering.

The Ghouls of Calle Goya is the perplexing story of how Evil can result from the happiest of circumstances and good intentions, and how madness can be the result.
Based on a true story.

About the Author: (from Amazon)

Author Owen Jones, from Barry, South Wales, came to writing novels relatively recently, although he has been writing all his adult life. He has lived and worked in several countries and travelled in many, many more.

He speaks, or has spoken, seven languages fluently and is currently learning Thai, since he lives in Thailand with his Thai wife of ten years.

"It has never taken me long to learn a language," he says, "but Thai bears no relationship to any other language I have ever studied before."

When asked about his style of writing, he said, "I'm a Celt, and we are Romantic. I believe in reincarnation and lots more besides in that vein. Those beliefs, like 'Do unto another...', and 'What goes round comes around', Fate and Karma are central to my life, so they are reflected in my work'.

His first novel, 'Daddy's Hobby' from the series 'Behind The Smile: The Story of Lek, a Bar Girl in Pattaya' has been followed by four sequels, but his largest collection is 'The Megan Series', eighteen novellas on the psychic development of a young teenage girl, the subtitle of which, 'A Spirit Guide, A Ghost Tiger and One Scary Mother!' sums them up nicely.

As Owen puts it:
'Born in the Land of Song, living in the Land of Smiles'.

As a rule I love books or movies that are based on true stories, however, this book would be awesome as a gift to my adult daughter who thrives on this genre of books.
