Some Books I Think You Should Re-Read

First off--this is NOT a political post--well not really anyway. Since all this started my mind keeps drifting back to a couple of books I read in high school (about 50 years ago?). Do any of you remember the line "All animals are created equal--but some are more equal then others."? George Orwell wrote both Animal Farm and 1984

The Handmaid's Tale

The seminal work of speculative fiction from the Booker Prize-winning, soon to be a Hulu series starring Elizabeth Moss, Samira Wiley, and Joseph Fiennes.

Offred is a Handmaid in the Republic of Gilead. She may leave the home of the Commander and his wife once a day to walk to food markets whose signs are now pictures instead of words because women are no longer allowed to read. She must lie on her back once a month and pray that the Commander makes her pregnant, because in an age of declining births, Offred and the other Handmaids are valued only if their ovaries are viable.

Offred can remember the days before, when she lived and made love with her husband Luke; when she played with and protected her daughter; when she had a job, money of her own, and access to knowledge. But all of that is gone now….

Funny, unexpected, horrifying, and altogether convincing, The Handmaid's Tale is at once scathing satire, dire warning, and literary tour de force.

Of course there is Brave New World and a couple of others but one that I REALLY want you to either read or watch the movie is:


Soylent Green


This is the year 2022. Overcrowding, pollution, and resource depletion have reduced society's leaders to finding food for the teeming masses. The answer is Soylent Green.
