If you have ever had to visit a relative in a nursing home you will be able to understand why these two sisters made a pact to die by the age of eighty. I watched my Grandmother in one with advanced dementia and I actually worked in a couple of nursing homes over the years in their accounting departments. It is not easy watching these once vibrant people slowly deteriorate. I more or less made myself the same promise all those years ago.
Of course life never ever goes totally smooth as we all know and love comes and goes. You meet someone and you know that he or she is the one--but then the summer or vacation is over and you have to go back. It is even worse when the love of your life goes into the army and is deemed missing in action. This is what happens to Jeanette--so she eventually gets married--
Fate plays a large part in this novel as does the love between sisters and family. Kim Cano is one of the great writers of our time who will make you feel and think, laugh and cry and in the end nod your head in agreement.

My mother used to work in nursing homes and she hated it, she always wanted to bring her patients home with her. I am not sure I would make a pact like that begin that I have kids I want to be around for them as long as possible (unless I am a burden to them). I would love to read the book.

The cover is a picture of my mom and Aunt Kathy. They were the ones who came up with the idea for the pact when they were kids. Now they just think they're cool because they're photo is on a book cover. :)
This was so moving. I couldn't work in a nursing home. It would drain me mentally.
I worked in a nursing home for several years and always felt like when someone is ready to let go, then they are ready to pass. We had someone that held on until her daughter flew in from Hawaii and then passed. I think deep down, she wanted to say goodbye to her daughter one last time.
We've had various family members in nursing homes over the years. There's such a wide variety of care levels - we always sprung for the best available.
Sounds like a very interesting book. I think nursing homes are very sad places, very sad to see how people deteriorate in their old age.
Its so sad because I know a few elderly people dealing with this and its no fun for their love ones. Thanks for sharing.

This woulds like such an interesting concept for a book and I can't wait to read it. I too have been around nursing homes and even now am watching my parents become child like once again. It's hard but glory to God I have the strength to help them in their time of need, because they cared for me without qualm.

I'd have to disagree with these girls. Both of my grandparents have been having amazing lives post 80...my Grandpa lived to 101!

The life after 80 premise of the books looks really interesting. It's hard for some especially if they are in foster homes. I'm sure it would be a great read.

The premise of this book is so intriguing! Such a current topic, but in a setting you wouldn't always think of. I still remember caroling in a nursing home when I was young and being a little traumatized by some of the conditions I saw there.

This book reminds me of my fatherin-law, he is almost 93 an I can tell that he is tired, hekept saying that he wants to rest already.

My friends and I made a pact when we were younger that we would always be the "Four Muskateers" and that we would never lose touch.

I can't recall any childhood pact that I made. My oldest son, however, made a pact as a kid that he would never turn into a snotty teenager. It didn't stick. He's 17 now. Lol.
