New York Earth Day Overview
United States Senator Gaylord Nelson thought up Earth Day in 1970 and managed to draw over 20 million participants to the holiday’s first celebration. Decades later in 2009, the United Nations agreed to name April 22nd International Mother Earth Day to recognize the importance of the world’s vital ecosystems.
Earth Day is now recognized by over one billion people in countless cities like the aptly named Big Apple. With its fruit inspired nickname, it’s hard to deny that New York City is one of the best places to celebrate Earth Day.
Earth Day New York boasts a laundry list of eco-conscious Earth Day events like New York Cares Day. There, nearly 4,000 New Yorkers volunteer their time to clean, mulch, and plant in green spaces throughout the city, ensuring its beautiful parks are ready for summer.
Meanwhile, psychedelic Earth Day celebrants head to the Green Festival (New York), where they can sample an organic beer and wine garden, make purchases at eco-fashion exhibits, and participate in DIY workshops, all while puffing the magic dragon.
Not too far away, attendees at Earth Day Grand Central are educated on the contemporary state of our environment as they meet and greet local and international green business owners.
New York City and Earth Day might not sound synonymous at first, but with its plethora of Earth Day parties, the Big Apple is the place to be on Earth Day.

I figured a little history of New York and Earth Day was in order and I really didn't want to paraphrase--PartyEarth said it so well!! If you are going to be in the city on 4/22--there will be plenty for you to do and see and as far as I can tell--all free!! Now for those of you who aren't going to be in the city there are plenty of activities planned elsewhere as well. I live in Westchester County--lets see what's going on there----

I need to check and see if we have anything going on in our area for Earth Day. I would love to be in NYC for the Green Earth Day.
That is awesome. We celebrate Earth day at home by recycling things and we are also starting to make our own compost this year.
It looks like NYC is the place to be on Earth Day!
Thanks for the information! I'm a NY'er and was looking to do something on Earth Day. Will be checking out the events list.

Earth Day was created the same year I was, lol. ;) My son is in elementary school so they do talk about Earth Day and plan activities. My daughter is in high school and for some reason they just don't bring it up anymore in the older grades. Silly, right?
my son's boy scout group did a river cleanup for earth day
To be honest, I don't remember Earth Day being a big deal when I was younger, but I think its awesome that people are taking notice now!
Now you have inspired me to look for things to do around here in my community. I generally do things at home, but I didn't think to look and see what else is going on.
That is really neat to hear the history of Earth Day in NYC. So many fun things to do, too.
Wish I was in NYC for Earth Day... Sounds like fun
It's good to hear this. I obviously think we could do a lot more than we are doing now, starting with big corporations and their efforts to make products recyclable in some way. That would help big time.
Great information on Earth Day - I don't know of any local celebrations - and didn't know it was worldwide - But, yes NYC sounds like that great place to be for this day! Maybe next year for me? :)
I think this is such a great day for raising awareness about taking care of our planet. I am glad you are getting the word out.
I wish we still lived close to the city. We try to do as much as we can at home, Ill have to look around where we live now to see if there is anything else to get my kids involved
My brother and his wife got married on Earth Day, so it's a special day for our family for additional reasons. I'd love to be in New York to celebrate (I'm sure they'd love an anniversary souvenir from there).
I was amazed when I was visiting earthday.org to see all the cool activites happening in NYC!
I'd like to be in a big city like NY for Earth Day. Our little town doesn't do anything, as far as I know, but the kids always get a tree at school to bring home to plant.
This is so awesome! I would love to be in NYC for Earth Day!
I hope there are a few planned events where I live. I'll have to look closer into that! NYC has some great events!
Thanks for the quick lesson on Earth Day, I was not aware of it - I knew of the celebration, but not the story behind it.
We're going to a recycling center for a field trip!
So interesting, I love earth day!
I feel like I used to celebrate this day! I will need to this year too!
I love Earth Day! Where I live, we have very important ordinance for the beach during sea turtle egg laying season - it's really made a huge difference in helping them make a comeback!
This is awesome information about Earth Day for sure and how it started. I would so love to go to New York to celebrate Earth Day. Thanks for sharing.
There are usually some activities in my town for Earth Day. We like to participate as a family.
I totally forgot it was Earth Day! Thanks for the reminder, if our entire family wasn't sick with the Flu I would say we would go do something. Perhaps we will have to celebrate earth day this weekend when we're all feeling better.
I think Earth Day activities are so important. We Jane quite a few in Omaha!
