This book is based on historical fact. The author outlines what has been changed in her prologue. England was really into colonization at one point in history and as George Bernard Shaw in 1897 according to a front piece in the book says:
"Every Englishman is born with a certain miraculous power that makes him master of the world. When he wants a thing, he never tells himself that he wants it. He waits patiently until there comes into his mind, no one knows how, a burning conviction that it is his moral and religious duty to conquer those who have got the thing he wants."
This is the story of India and the people, both villagers and high born leaders. There is one leader who is a female warrior and she breaks purdah for herself and 10 warrior females, carefully chosen to protect her. It is also the story of one of those chosen and how her life and the life of her family is changed forever by the invasion. The British have decided that they want India and will do anything to annex it.
This is a well written and thoughtful book, one I would recommend any person who likes historical novels with the ring of truth. I certainly enjoyed reading it. Remember history so that it does not happen again!
About the Book: (from Amazon)
From the internationally bestselling author of Nefertiti and Cleopatra’s Daughter comes the breathtaking story of Queen Lakshmi—India’s Joan of Arc—who against all odds defied the mighty British invasion to defend her beloved kingdom.
When the British Empire sets its sights on India in the mid-nineteenth century, it expects a quick and easy conquest. India is fractured and divided into kingdoms, each independent and wary of one another, seemingly no match for the might of the English. But when they arrive in the Kingdom of Jhansi, the British army is met with a surprising challenge.
Instead of surrendering, Queen Lakshmi raises two armies—one male and one female—and rides into battle, determined to protect her country and her people. Although her soldiers may not appear at first to be formidable against superior British weaponry and training, Lakshmi refuses to back down from the empire determined to take away the land she loves.
Told from the unexpected perspective of Sita—Queen Lakshmi’s most favored companion and most trusted soldier in the all-female army—Rebel Queen shines a light on a time and place rarely explored in historical fiction. In the tradition of her bestselling novel, Nefertiti, and through her strong, independent heroines fighting to make their way in a male dominated world, Michelle Moran brings nineteenth-century India to rich, vibrant life.
This book will be published on March 3, 2015

I really loved this book! My review is going up next Monday. Michelle Moran is an amazing writer. Have you read anything else from her?
Historical fiction is an interesting genre and a controversial one too. I likes ones that set the story against the times accurately and on the right context....and then just runs away in the fiction part. Looks like a good read.
This sounds like a book I might make time to read. My biggest trouble with historical fiction is not having a good understanding of what is true and where the author took license. I'm glad they touch on that at the beginning of this one. India is such a fascinating culture!
I really do like history in a book. In fact, my favorite genre is history, but I've found some really great historical fiction books around too!
I love reading books with some historical events in them. Sadly the last book I was was the 50 shades of grey trilogy and that was like 4 years ago...LOL!
