You probably have memories of curling up next to a roaring fire as a child. You remember sitting there Christmas morning while opening your gifts or you recall running straight for the fireplace when you came inside after sledding. These days not many people choose to burn wood in their home, since the smoke and emitted particles are proven to be harmful to your health and the environment. You don't want a toxic fire in your home but you do want your space to have an inviting and comforting feel in the cold months. Below are a few essentials to make that happen.
Ethanol Fireplaces - You don't have to completely say goodbye to fire; you just need a safer option. Ethanol fireplaces offer the realistic fire folks are drawn to, but they don't create smoke or emit toxins. If you have young children, you will appreciate that there are wall-mounted varieties available that they can't reach. You can find a big selection of these from places like Pro Home Stores.
Soft Blankets - Spend a little extra on high quality blankets that feel good against your skin. Cheap blankets will generally pill and get increasingly scratchy with every wash. Lightweight blankets don't offer the cozy feeling you need in the winter. Make sure you have soft blankets for everyone. You don't need the family arguing over who is getting "stuck" with the blanket no one wants.

Space Heater - There are always certain rooms that are so much colder than other rooms. These rooms can use small energy-efficient heaters. Make sure you put one in the bathroom. You probably turn the heat down a few degrees before bed, when you get up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom it feels like a refrigerator. This also holds true if you are the first person in the shower early morning before everyone wakes up. That little space heater will feel amazing.
Towel Warmer - Speaking of the bathroom, a towel warmer will quickly become one of those things you don't know how you ever lived without. It is not a necessity, but you sure will appreciate it when you have a warm towel to dry off with as the cold air hits you.
Humidifier - Homes often feel uncomfortable and significantly cooler than they actually are because of dry air. A little humidity will go a long way in making a space cozier.

I love to leave a large stock pot of water on the stove (on low heat) and add cinnamon sticks to humidify and freshen up the apartment at once! Thanks for the great ideas!
Cuddling up with an extra thick blanket is my favorite. I look forward to that.
My wife has been bugging me to get her a towel warmer. I think it would be nice too, maybe soon!
I want a Ethanol Fireplace. That would be really nice to have at our house, especially for the holiday season.
I'd like one of these. We have one room that it would be just perfect for, and your pictures here make the fireplace look even more inviting.
I would love to get a fireplace like this one for my home. It can get really cold in the living room during the winter.
Thank you so much for this. We have been looking for alternatives to wood in our fireplace and now I have a great list to go by.
I really like your ideas and what you did. I could really use these ideas for a cozier holiday
I vote for the blanket! I do like the wall mounted fireplace though, it looks so cozy!
