Mission Statement (from the site)
Tribes-A-Dozen offers a diverse line of
high-quality, natural baking mixes so that even our busiest follower could create bread with the taste, aroma, and quality expected of a bread made from scratch.
WE SEE bread-baking as an expression of life's simplest joys, which Tribes-A-Dozen aims to spread by rekindling the tradition of baking bread at home.
WE BELIEVE that we nourish and share our humanity through the baking and breaking of bread and that no one would go hungry if every person mastered the basics of bread-baking.
WE RESOLVE to forge connections to all people and to the earth that are as straightforward and as warm as a freshly-baked loaf of bread.
I love bread--Wheat, Rye, Pumpernickle and Challah! So when Tribes-a-Dozen asked me to try their All Natural Egg Bread mixes, which use only natural ingredients, are Kosher and a whole lot more-I said to myself--why not. Now remember-I am in no form or shape a baker nor am I all that good at following directions and they do give some great tips on the site as well as recipes; but when I received 3 boxes 1 each of their varieties I figured I'd try. Of course my Mom made me read the directions to her over the phone and when I mentioned that I would buy a small carton of egg yolks and one of egg whites (I can not separate an egg to save my life) and some regular vegetable oil she said never mind I will separate the egg for you and give you some oil-which she did when I went to meet her yesterday. On the site it said that I could use a bowl and wooden spoon to mix everything together. Okay, no problem since I do not have a electric mixer of any kind. So this morning I took out my big bowl and wooden spoon and got to work--uh-you really will have an easier time of it with an electric mixer or bread kneader--I ended up using my hands! THEN-remember I told you I am no good at directions-I realized that I needed a rolling pin--nope-don't have that. so I gallantly formed about 4 balls let them sit to rise put them in the oven. They don't look too pretty--but they sure do taste delicious! Thankfully I do not have a camera for pictures!! I think I will make the next two boxes AT my Mom's apartment where there is everything but the mixer.
