Bonnie grew up in an extremely abusive atmosphere where her Mom was as abused as she. They lived on the “road” for many years following the harvests as migrant workers-Bonnie was forced to work from a very young age. Although her mother loved her—she could not protect her much less herself-At the age of 16 Bonnie ran away from home no longer able to take the abuse. For 4 years, during the time of WW 2 Bonnie scrapped for a living then came up with a plan which she executed. She hid all the evidence in a Red Box. When Bonnie realized that she was on the cusp of getting caught-she left and took the first bus out she could get. She ended up in Nebraska where she started to meet different people who she treated very badly.
Her second job was a god send-the woman she worked with a saint and one of those people who are always kind and gentle. When Bonnie was evicted for having a cat (who she had saved from a drain pipe)-Irene invited her to live at her house until she found a place that accepted pets. This was the first time Bonnie had ever experienced a loving atmosphere and it slowly began to change her. She met Irene’s nephew who had just been discharged and they fell in love. For the first time Bonnie allowed someone else to know what her life had been like—but never revealed the secrets in the red box!
I can not tell you any more or I will give away the entire plot! This is an extremely well thought out and written novel and I will be looking for more from this author!
From the back of the book:
Bonnie has secrets to keep—secrets with the potential to destroy lives, including her own. Running from her destructive and pain filled past, she recreates herself, believing she has escaped the damning evidence hidden in the red box. When her former life is revealed by a cruel twist of fate, Bonnie faces losing everything, including Glen, the only man she’s ever loved. But is Bonnie the woman he thinks she is?
Set against the backdrop of the 1940s, Secrets of the Red Box is filled with intrigue and suspense—sure to keep you guessing to the very end!
