It Can’t Hurt To Ask!

Friday, March 8, 2013

As some of my readers know I recently left a job and have not been able to replace it. I still have some of my own clients which helps and applied for early social security. While applying early for social security is not the best idea, I really had no choice. Bills have to be paid one way or another. Then I made a spreadsheet of what I owe monthly versus what I will be bringing in—uh oh—was my immediate reaction. But this is the SHE CAME SHE SAW SHE CONQUERED woman writing here. So my brain started going over some of the possibilities.

I had already reduced my health insurance-of course now I have a high deductible- by over half. Luckily my doctor accepts this new insurance. I am also lucky then other then a slow thyroid and diabetes which through my own stubbornness I was able to control mostly by diet-I tend to be healthy. I can usually take OTC meds for colds etc and they work!

Then on Tuesday morning as I was walking over to my car I saw I had a flat! Luckily the superintendent was able to use an air compressor to fill that tire so I could drive to a gas station near by. Turns out I picked up a nail somewhere—the gas station attendant was able to plug it!! I cancelled my client that I was supposed to be at Tuesday for Wednesday. I came home and a light bulb went off in my head. My car insurance which I pay for in 4 payments was coming due this month!!

I picked up the phone and called my car insurance company-GEICO. I explained that I would really like to lower my rates-drastically. After I finally convinced the automated voice that I really wanted a human I was connected quickly to one of the most helpful gentleman. I asked if it would help if I dropped collision—I have a 2003 car which is all banged up! He had me go to look up what I would get for a trade in—not much I’m afraid. Then after he was sure that this really was in my best interest he began to walk me through the on line process—I got a wee bit confused—so he took over. After that was completed he asked if I would like to speak to their underwriting dept to see if I could get even more of a reduction. So obviously I said yes, and was transferred to another really nice and helpful gentleman. It seems that it was still on my policy that I drove approx 13,000 miles a year. Now that I do not drive to NJ 3 times a week—no way—we changed it to 5,000 miles a year. MORE SAVINGS!! I went from $900 a year to 500 a year!! That equates to over 100.00 each payment!! Both these gentlemen informed me that if I took the defensive driving course offered by Geico on line that I could save an additional 37.00 a year. I will definitely be looking into this.

As I was paying this much reduced payment online I noticed that they have homeowners insurance and it may be possible to get extra discounts—once I find my homeowners policy—I will be giving Geico another call!!

My workplace offers the defensive driving class for free every other year!

I could use a defensive driving class for safety not even for a better price but that would be nice too.

So glad you were able to drop your rates. It's so hard to get buy with high bills like health insurance, car insurance and the likes. We recently had to change up our divers policy too in order to save a couple hundred dollars a year.

Very nice! It is amazing what can happen when you start looking closely and asking questions. Maybe I can take a little off our car insurance.

wow you paid 4 payments at once, that's great! We had Geico for years but we recently changed because they kept raising our rates and we thankfully never had to use it.
