There are so many places to get coupons these days. They can be found on your computer, delivered with your mail and in the stores both online and offline. Not to mention many bloggers compile lists of specific stores coupons on their blogs which they compile for us from Sunday newspaper flyers in order to up your savings more. There are even sites that have deals sent to your inbox for locations in your immediate area. Not to forget the places that pay bloggers to place coupons on their blogs. So---where should you start? Where can you get the best deals and save the most money?
First off, if you do not need an item or were not planning on getting it—guess what—you will be spending more money even if you do use a coupon! Food or drugstore coupons are the exception to this rule. If you buy a brand that is not only on sale but you happen to have a coupon and you were going to buy a similar product—of course you should try it out. You may find a new favorite product!
If you happen upon an online coupon for a service, say a haircut, and you actually need that haircut—yes, you will be saving money. A gym membership—that depends--will you really use it, or will you go once and then make excuses and never quite make it there again. If you really were going to a store to buy a specific item and you search the internet-no online coupon or offline coupons (and no free shipping deals) well you would probably be better off just buying that item even if it means driving to the store to save on shipping.

You are right and I think too many people fall into this trap.
Very informative and interesting MikiHope. I have never used coupons so it is good to learn more about this.
It's funny that you wrote about this today, because I sort of did to. I love it when people got an "awesome" deal on 425 boxes of fruit snacks that they are never going to eat. I always make a list, and then look at coupons based on what's already on my list.
Interesting article and I totally agree with you. I do use coupons sometimes, when I remember to, that is.
I completely agree that you aren't saving money if you are buying something just because you have the coupon for it. Same theory as buying something you don't need just because it's on sale!
Completey agree aswell, buying something that you don;t really need or a brand you don;t really like just because your saving money is crazy. Although I do need to really start working on couponing to try to save money.
I only clip coupons I use because I fell into the coupon trap a couple of years ago. I am currently revamping my budget. I recently changed my cable bill (I am stuck in a contract right now) to a lower service and am saving $40 a month. Once the contract is up I am doing away with it completely. There are so many options out there for tv with Netflix, Hulu and even Amazon it isn't necessary to pay $100 when you can get what you need for a fraction of the cost.
I used to do couponing, it does help but it takes a lot of time and sometimes I just don't have the patience. I see my sister in laws stuff at her house and she has so much and I don;t think it's practical to have 12 cans of things that you won't need right away :)

In some way, as long as you watch that you do save using those coupons. i only used coupons with the items what we usually buy. at least we don't need to pay the full price though
Grocery coupons truly can save money on items regularly used.
I am a huge couponer, I am not a hoarder though. I am a stay at home mom who uses coupons to get lots of items (yes, some I do not use) for free. That being said, I love to donate to people who need it. I help families who have foster children, one family has 9 kids they are trying to raise so it is my way to still help on one income. I agree you can get carried away with coupons and end up spending more than you normally would, but you can also learn to do it to save and help others without spending more. I still only get four papers and never print coupons so I do not get that much, it is still enough though!
I do agree, even if you have coupon a but you do need the item, why buy?
Absolutely! I used coupons to the items that are very important to us!
