This Old Earth is Taking a Beating!

We are currently going through a very active geologic period—massive volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, monster hurricanes and tornados and now pieces of a meteor made it through our lower atmosphere causing a sonic boom that shattered windows in Chelyabinsk, Russia. To make things even more interesting, according to the article, scientists were actually watching another which was coming from a different direction but missed Earth entirely. I almost feel like I am living a science fiction novel—but this is no sci fi novel—this stuff is real. And it seems to me that all these calamities are happening closer and closer together.

I do have an Environmental Science degree (heavy on the science-not so much the political) and distinctly remember that Geology course I took. What I remember most was reading that the Earth was 10,000 years behind on it’s next ice age. Scared me then—and with what is going on-scares me even more now. I am NOT saying that the end of the world is coming—but the world as we know it might very well be. And honestly I don’t think it has too much to do with what we have done to the environment or not done—we may have speeded up or slowed down the process—but what we are experiencing and witnessing is the earth in one of its more vicious cycles.
