That's right--me. As a lot of you know I am looking feverishly for a job to replace the one I left at the end of December. The other day I paid to have my resume send to a whole lot of places on the internet. Being kind of old school I am not totally sure about how you apply for jobs on-line and I guess it showed!! I received 5 emails almost immediately about what seemed to be the same job-for at home work (data entry w/some bookkeeping). 4 of them did not look right to me and I deleted them. The 5th was very well written and grammatically correct. So-I wrote back. I received an email stating that I should add this person to my Yahoo messenger and the interview would be conducted there--I did so--passed with flying colors (this person really knew the questions to ask!) and was "hired". I was told that I would be receiving a check for all software, etc needed and would have to buy from "their" vendor. Ok-I could live with that--but when I asked where the vendor was located--well they could not answer me. We left off that I would wait for the check, find out from my bank how long it would take to clear then proceed from there. I was supposed to call her at 9 tomorrow morning-I won't be-I signed off--there were one too many inconsistencies and the company was Goldman Sachs, the investment banking firm.
So--after being happy for about 15 minutes I began to seriously wonder--Goldman Sachs is in NYC and I live near NYC so I went to their website and got their phone number. I explained to the woman who answered why I was calling and she directed me to the security department. It was definitely a SCAM. I forwarded the email and the entire IM conversation to him!! If I ever receive that check--I will forward to them as well and if I receive the laptop--RETURN TO SENDER!! I am not too thrilled with Spammers, but sometimes what they write is almost funny and some of them do try to tell you how they "love" your blog. HOWEVER--I HATE SCAMMERS. This is the first time this has happened to me--and hopefully the last!!
The good news is I did not cancel my interview with an employment agency tomorrow. Maybe tomorrow will be my lucky day-and they will have some kind of a temporary part time or part time job not too far from where I live!!

Wow Michele. Luckily you got smart and looked into the company! So many people scamming on the internet right now, you can't even rent a house without knowing if the people are on the up and up or not. I wish you luck with finding a job and hope you are doing well.
Well, crap. People suck sometimes. I'm glad things worked out! Praying for a great job for you!
Glad you checked it out! I get so creeped out by that stuff... It's hard for us "normal" people to believe there is such pond scum out there. Really...how do they sleep at night?
I'm so glad you thought to look into this. I know you have been wanting to go back to work so badly. I hate that people like this prey on good people.
Good for you to trust your gut and check into it!! WOW!
Thank you all--If you would please share this so the word gets out that these people are at it again (this is coming from me and the security person at Goldman Sachs)-I really don't want this to happen to anyone else--I knew enough to double check-but others may not--please spread the word!!
Wow good thing you figure it out! I was just thinking about a post idea related to scams.
I am really glad that you figured out you were being scammed before it went further. It is sad how so many people today are trying to do that to honest people. You were really smart, some people these days are falling for those kinds of scams and worse. I'm going to share your post and maybe it will help someone else.
One has to be careful of the persons who send out spam or try to scam you. The spams are really hilarious although sometimes quite annoying. When persons try to scam you that is another matter. Serious and frustrating! I hope you got a job today. My best wishes to you and have a wonderful weekend.
One time when I got the "mailing you a check" scam I gave them the address to the police chief to send it too! LOL
wow scary!!! I hate that. I had something similar happen with a nanny job. Something along the lines I live out of state, I need a nanny I'll pay you up front and then some. Blah. Blah. Blah. People are seriously low!!! Have you ever thought of selling Scentsy?? I freaking love it. Best job ever. And no scam ;) rachelmarie24.scentsy.us contact me if you wanna know anything. Just thought I'd try to help. Hugs and I hope they do send you that check so you can also send that in to the company and they try and find out who did this to you :(
good luck with your interview with an employment agency!
people are just willing to scam everywhere. pretty sad society we live in. sorry this happened to you
I'm so glad you turned them in and didn't get scammed! it's unbelievable how many scams there are now!
I am so happy you checked them out....
Someone else I know had something similar happen. I am not sure of all the details, but I do know that they cashed a check sent by a scam job and their account was cleaned out. I am so glad you listened to your gut on this one.
