Wedding Bands – Are They Strong Enough to Last?

Wednesday, January 2, 2013

Men can be hard on Jewelry—especially those that work with their hands for instance in the construction industry or the chemical industry. One of my closest friends was going to get married. Her prospective husband was a construction worker who worked with steel and concrete. He was massive—all hard muscle with very large hands. She was petite. They went out and bought some really beautiful, expensive gold wedding bands. Both resolved never to take them off. That was the first mistake!!

Soap-----we wash dishes in it—wash our hands—and unfortunately soap, being basic (as opposed to acidic) in nature is slippery. First my friend almost lost her ring while doing dishes—luckily her husband was handy enough to be able to retrieve it and she hadn’t started the garbage disposal! The second time it slid off her finger into the toilet-again husband to the rescue! From then on she took her ring off before using any kind of soap for any reason!

One day they were sitting in front of the TV holding hands when my friend noticed that her husband’s wedding band was dented and in pretty horrible shape. It seems that when he was working the ring kept getting in the way—but he still didn’t want to remove it. Now my friend was pretty upset and came to me complaining and worrying about what others would think. I was in the midst of taking environmental courses at the time and after consoling her suggested that just maybe a different metal, possibly tungsten steel would do the trick.

So we started researching and found that all kinds of tungsten rings, not just wedding bands are super strong. Not only that but they can be polished to a shine that closely resembles white gold or platinum. My friend bought one for her husband and he has been wearing it ever since!!

Hubby and I had a double ring ceremony when we got married almost 40 years ago. Hubby ended up in construction and nearly lost his finger because his ring got caught. He took it off and wore it around his neck on a gold chain except that metal gets hot and cold. Off came the ring and it was put in the jewellry box. Thye ring actually got lost for nearly 10 years. Even though he doesn't wear any rings we are still happily married and will celebrate our 40th anniversary this summer.

I can relate, my husband hates jewelry. He wears his wedding band during the day and the 1st thing he does when he gets home is take it off! Happy he at least wears one! :)

I used to have a neighbor who lost his finger due to his ring getting stuck in a machine, so I know the dangers. But, due to my husband being vey anti-jewelry he got a Tungsten ring. It has survived for 6 years so far!!

My husband wears a beautiful custom wedding band that he loves and never removes. However I had a previous husband that removed his often, preferring to be thought of as single, and another who could not wear his at work in the oilfield due to the risk of injury. Since he wasn't used to having it on his hand, he rarely wore it when he was off. It is true that gold, especially better quality gold, is soft and will dent and easily loose it's round shape. A stronger metal is not a bad idea, or maybe matching tattoos! :-))

My husband's wedding ring is well worn. I really love the Tungston steel; but we wanted a GOld color for the wedding rings so his would match mine. But the next ring I get him will probably be that steel.

A similar event happened to my friend who is a plumber. He had a platinum wedding band but banged it so badly that the inscription on the outside was unrecognizable. He has since been wearing a tungsten ring with the same engraving. It's lasted much longer than the platinum ring to this day!

Of course, rings are the symbol of love, but we should not dramatize. We have to take the off when bathing, washing or working with the hands. It will help to preserve the rings.
